Vitamins, organic substances the body needs in small amounts, is ingested with our food. They do not supply energy nor do they add substantially to the body’s size. They are substances that help trigger reactions in the body.

There are two basic categories of these vitamins, water soluble and fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins do not get stored in the body, any excess amounts are flushed out when we urinate. Fat soluble vitamins are dissolved and get stored in the fatty tissues of the body. Water soluble vitamins must be taken on a daily basis. Fat soluble vitamins can be ingested less often.

We also need small quantities of minerals. The body is made up of a number of metallic elements, which add up to about 5% of our total body weight. We obtain these minerals by eating vegetables and meats. If you eat enough of these two food groups you should be getting sufficient minerals. These minerals play a metabolic role in the body and helps with the synthesis of glycogen, proteins and fats.

Water is an essential nutrient, as it is a major component of the body. Its main role is to act as transportation for the various chemicals in your system.
