Most people, boys or girls, who decide they want to do bodybuilding, decide in their teens, usually because they are not happy with their current look, either too skinny or too plump, depending what age they are, ealry teens or late teens the process is the same, first you need to understand your body type, there are 3 categories of body types.

Important - Teenage body builders who are starting out at 14 or 15 need to remember their bones are not completely developed and that lifting heavy weights can actually damage them, your joints will also still be developing and forcing them to lift heavy weights can permanently damage them, after you have worked out your body type and created your training program the next step to understand is how to perform the exercises correclty.

Ectomorph - You can usually tell an ectomorph body type by the arms and legs, they will be long and thin, the body will be low on fat storage also have narrow chest and shoulders, the muscles are already defined but look long and thin as do the feet, fingers and hands.

Mesomorph - Probably the ideal body for a body builder to start with, an ectomorph already has shape, a large chest and a solid muscle structure to work on.

Endomorph - An undefined muscle structure plump face, short neck wide around the waist and high fat storage.

Nobody has the ideal body type so it is important to define where you fit in so you can create your workout to suit your body type.

An ectomorph first needs to gain weight, in the form of muscle, as muscle ways more than fat ectomorphs will find it difficult to gain fat, this is good news as they wont need to watch their diets to closely, ectomorph body builders do not have the strengh or energy to perform long workouts thus making the formation of solid muscle a slow process, after the first few weeks of training they will find their food consumption can almost double and their training sessions lasting longer.

Mesomorph bodies are the lucky ones, they find it easy to build solid muscle without as much effort, but, they will need to do a variety of exercises in their workout to build good defenition rather than just bulking up.

Endomorph bodies will find it very easy to build muscle mass the only downfall is they need to watch their diet very closely as they can easily gain fat and that hides the muscle.
